and those who are stuck in a job they hate, and those who would not touch business even with a pole, and those who are just starting out, and those who have been at it for a little while – the list is endless. This book is for you all – REWORK.
BOOK REVIEW – REWORK – JASON FRIED AND DAVID HEINEMEIER HANSSON – 2010 – 279PAGES
REWORK is a brain resetting book about starting and growing a business. Forget all you think you know about launching a business and being the miracle one business that survives when the remaining nine out of ten fails. Rework says they are not true and the success of 37 Signals, the company started and run by both authors is their proof. They go against everything you thought you needed to know or do about launching a business.
The book is simply written. Each chapter is short and precise with most topics taking only a page. Topics are arranged in groups which start by first deleting all the false truths we have held on to about businesses, then rebuilding it, promoting and growing it. It also has some witty chapter topics like Emulate drug dealers.
I would easily say the book is aimed at starters (not entrepreneurs, you’d have to read it to know the difference) but the authors are more open minded to include even those who wouldn’t even entertain the thought of launching a business, people who love their jobs but hate their bosses or those just plain bored! It is the type of business book that is written from a place of experience not academia.
Some of my most compelling quotes from the book are;
- What you DO is what matters, not what you think, say or plan.
When you want something bad enough, you will make out time regardless of your other obligations. The truth is that most people just don’t want it bad enough. Don’t let yourself off the hook with excuses. It is entirely your responsibility to make your dreams come true.
- Don’t be afraid of sharing. As a business owner, you should share everything you know; it wont stop your business.
Start building your audience today. Start getting people interested in what you have to say. And then, keep at it. In a few years, you too will chuckle when people discuss your overnight success.
- Competitors can never copy the YOU in your product.
Tosan’s take: from the first few chapters, I fell in love with the book. I guess it was mostly from the relief it provided. It just throws out all the labels and things that weigh you down about entrepreneurship and launching a business.
I am an apostle of REWORK. I plan to live its principles with all my businesses and the more to come. I will particularly dedicate this book to those who have great ideas but are stuck in jobs they hate and with comments like – there is no time, and those who have so many great ideas but are not sure which ones to go with (too many choices). Simple truths in this book will set you free! I am a believer!
